New In The Shop: An Unkindness of Ravens

Good Morning,

Last weekend I received some neat and unique components for creating jewelry.  I spent time creating accompaniments or fitting the design together for truly interesting and one of a kind  adornments.

A group of Ravens, depending on where there are or what they are doing may be called, a Constable of Ravens, this usually refers to the ravens kept captive at the Tower of London, it is thought that their flight encircling the tower protects the Crown (the country).  Raven groups are also called a Conspiracy or an Unkindness, ravens are highly territorial and will sometimes attack other birds or ravens not of their flock, long ago this was looked as an unkindness in the animal kingdom.

Ravens Nook, has it's own unkindness that conspires to bring out the darker side of your fashion choices.  Currently available:

Ravens Leash Chainmaille Collar Viperscale Bird Skull Silver and Gunmetal Necklace Pendant

This gorgeous collar is fascinating and lavish. One of three limited edition pendant designs, a beautiful length of Viperscale Chainmaille fashions a remarkably deceptive and attractive intricate pattern of contrasting gunmetal and silver plated jump rings. Accented with a big, bold, and bright silver plated raven / bird skull pendant. Perfect for Goth, Rocker, Film or Fantasy Event attire, Cos-play or LARP costuming needs. Versatile and easily paired with a chic weekend date night outfit or casual jeans and t-shirt.

Chain is 16.5" including clasp. 18g gunmetal and silver-plated jump rings are woven in the Viperscale Chainmaille pattern and finished with a matching silver-plated square hook and eye style clasp.

Pendant is 1-3/4" x 3/4" silver-plated over brass, hollow back and lightweight.

Raven Charm Stainless Steel Chainmail Necklace

A Ravens Nook exclusive. Big, bold and bright, this strong and simplified necklace makes a great statement piece without being overwhelming. One of a limited selection of three pendants, this stylized Raven / Bird skull is perfect for Goth or Rocker fashions, Film or Fantasy Event Attire, Cos-play or LARP costume needs. Amulet, Charm, Talisman, or just a really interesting pendant, this unique piece is sure to spice up any wardrobe.

Appropriate for men or women. Elegant, exciting, weird and wonderful all in one powerful pendant.

Chain is 18" long including clasp, and is woven with 18g Stainless Steel jump rings in a twisted double link pattern. Finished with a Lobster Claw and Tab clasp.

Pendant is 1-3/4" x 3/4", silver plated over brass, with hollow back making it lightweight.

Time For Ravens Bronze Raven Pendant Necklace

Unique and interesting this stylized raven / bird skull pendant is antiqued to bring out the flower and vine detail along the surface of the piece. The raven hangs beneath a lovely bronze bi-cone glass bead and topped with a pretty, decorative cap. A small watch face charm backs the piece and stamped hands show the time at a quarter to midnight. Perfect for Steampunk, Rocker or Gothic fashions. Would make a great costume accessory for film or Cos-play needs.

Chain is 18" long.
Pendant - 1=3/4" long to beak tip. Tip is not sharp.

Snow Raven Silver and Gemstone Necklace and Earring Set Genuine Snow Quartz Crystal Silver Plated Bird Skull Jewelry Set One Of A Kind

A rare and beautiful creature, white ravens do exist and may be found on Qualicum Beach, a town on the island of Vancouver, British Columbia. One of a kind, fashionable and unique, this antiqued silver plated raven / bird skull is just right for the secrets hidden in the deeper mysteries of Night. A perfect accompaniment to Gothic gowns of black lace, or leather-clad rockers up on stage, this sensational piece is sure to draw applause or oohs and ahs. Offset that black outfit with a subtle hint of shiny contrast.

Necklace is a total of 23-3/4" long from Clasp to pendant tip (beak).
Chain is approx. 22".
Antiqued silver-plated bird skull is decorated with a flower on the forehead and vines along the surface, the beak is long, but not sharp, it will not poke or scratch the wearer. Genuine Snow Quartz beads interrupt the chain at equal intervals and dangle in a graduated accent from the pendant. Pendant is 1-1/4"long from bail to beak end. Finished with a Lobster Claw clasp.

Matching earrings are included, and hang about 1-/12" from ear wire, accented with genuine Snow Quartz beads and suspended from a silver-plated Fish Hook style ear wire. Snow Quartz is an opaque white quartz crystal.

Ravens At Night Gemstone and Raven Charm Earrings Genuine Labradoite and Pewter Bird Jewelry

This charming little pair of earrings are unusual and attractive, subtle flashes of prismatic light play across the surface of the genuine Labradorite beads, reminding one of a cloudy moonlit midnight, or storm that might be passing overhead. Great for Rocker, Goth or darker fashion attire.

A member of the feldspar mineral family, legend holds that it fell from the frozen fire of the Aurora Borealis, appearing as an average stone until it catches the light revealing a shimmer that represents the separation between the waking world and that of the unseen realms. This shimmer is called labradorescence. Labradorite is said to calm the mind, and helps to bring out the best in people.

Earrings are approx 2-1/2" long and hand about 2" from ear lobe.

Flat, round Labradorite beads are accented with silver-plated beads and a small Raven / Bird charm, a highly detailed piece of zinc alloy, nickle and lead free, that resembles aged pewter. Suspended from silver-plated Fish Hook style ear wires.

Jet Black Silver Raven Gemstone Raven Charm Earrings Genuine Jet and Bird Charm Jewelry

Jet, a beautiful and interesting stone, in the fact that it is not a stone but a by product of highly pressurized decomposing wood from millions of years ago. It lends an air of age and mystique to any piece of jewelry.

Genuine Jet beads are accented with silver-plated beads and a pair of Raven Charms. Ravens are made of a zinc alloy, nickle and lead free, resembling aged pewter.

Earrings are approx. 2-1/2" in length a hang approx. 2" from the ear lobe. Lightweight and cute.

Genuine Lava Rock and Bird Skull Earrings Gemstone Raven Skull Jewelry OOAK

Original and unique, these are primitive and fun, funky and daring. Terrific for Cos-play Costumes, Film or Fantasy Event attire, Halloween, or just for those drawn to the darker side of fashion.

Earrings are approx. 3" total length, and hang approx. 2-1/2" from the earlobe.

Raven Charm is 1-3/4" long from bail to beak, antiqued silver-plate over brass.

8mm Lava Rock beads have been polished to a smooth finish while maintaining the natural beauty of the naturally pitted lava rock, accented with silver plated beads and finished with silver plated Fish Hook style ear wires.

Illusion (Shadow) Knitting - FREE PATTERN

NOTE: When first published there was an error at Row 32 of the pattern, this post has been edited and reflects the correct pattern.  *A Chart is also available, if you would prefer.  Please contact us here to have one -e-mailed to you for free.

Good Morning,

Wednesday's posts are usually devoted to new goings on in the studio or the shop.  We will save that for Friday this week I think.

I was asked recently if I know how to create and write a pattern?  In other words, Do I really know what I am doing?  Well, yes, yes, I do.

Although I wrote this pattern a couple of years ago, it may still be knit with the same results.  Featured on The Leaky Cauldron , Harry Potter Crafts, (gallery photo, site is currently under going changes and Tutorial / Instruction are unavailable), it is an easy pattern to follow.

The finished product creates an illusion.  When viewed straight on the piece appears to be striped, when viewed at an angle a picture appears.

Illusion knitting is easier than it looks.

Pattern Instructions are below:

I used Caron Simply Soft 100% Acrylic Worsted Weight (4) in Dark Country Blue and Heather Grey for the colors, like the movie. I changed it to banner or wall hanging. It is about 18-1/2" long from end to end fringe adds about 3" to 6" to over all length (depending on fringe length).

A few notes about the pattern:

The instructions below are for the WRONG SIDE of the pattern only. The RIGHT SIDE is KNIT every row! Just knit nothing else. I did say KNIT the RIGHT SIDE, right?

Ravenclaw Illusion (Shadow) Banner

Approx: 18-1/2" (23-1/2" with fringe)

Materials: Caron Simply Soft 100% Acrylic in Dark Country Blue [MC] and Grey Heather [CC] (no dye lot), 1 skein each (about 315 yards). You may choose any worsted weight yarn in the color of your choice.

Needles: Size 6 (US) straight

Gauge: is about 22 sts and 36 rows = 4", or about 6-1/2 (7) sts. per inch.

NOTES: Two rows of each color are worked and then changed for the next two rows so on and so forth, continue in this manner for the entire project. Carry the colors loosely up the side at each color change, no one will ever notice. Instructions are written for the wrong side only, KNIT every right side (odd numbered) row.

It takes four rows of knitting to complete one row of pattern, the first row is establishing the illusion [CC] the next rows follow the illusion in reverse [MC] making the stitches "pop" out from the material.

The first and last 2 stitches of pattern are a selvage edge to help the piece lay flat and not roll. Light blocking will help if your banner rolls too much.

The design (illusion) is a total of 150 rows, counting the beginning border and end Bind Off rows. The photo is a mirror image, your bird will face the opposite direction when completed.  (New Photos have been provided).

Abbreviations:

K = Knit
P = Purl
MC = Main Color
CC = Contrast Color
sts. = stitches

Fringe

Cut 14 12" inch pieces of MC and 13 12" pieces CC divide into our groups of three, using two strands of MC and 1 strand of CC for middle fringe piece. Find the center bottom of your banner and attach the blue/grey fringe there, alternate the other eight sections and space them equally along the bottom of the banner.

Hang it on your wall, your all done!

NOTE 2:  If desired you may continue in Stockinette Stitch, working the stripe pattern until it is the desired length, you may then follow the instructions from row 136 through row 1 (knit it upside down) and have the image on the opposite side creating a scarf.  You may also continue in the stripe pattern until the piece is 18" shorter than you would like.  Work the Illusion piece and Kitchner stitch or join the pieces together.  Whichever your preferred method the scarf will be stunning in the end.

A little validation or verification... This pattern was originally posted on my knitting blog "Arachknits" (the blog is no longer in use, but the link and pattern are still there.

Hi A....!
First, let me say I'm sorry to post a comment on your blog like this. I generally prefer to e-mail people, but as I couldn't find any other means of contacting you, here I am, posting on your blog :)

I am writing to you because I'm a crafty witch for The Leaky Cauldron, working in the Harry Potter Crafts section, which you can see here: http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/features/crafts.

As you can see, we are posting tutorials and pictures for all sorts of Harry Potter Crafts there, and I was wondering if you would allow us to post the Ravenclaw illusion banner pictures and tutorial posted above. We would also love to post the pictures for the knitted Hedwig (pattern from Charmed Knits). We would identify the pictures and pattern as coming from you . There is also a disclaimer in each of the tutorials, as well as 2 long paragraphs on the front page of the crafts section explaining visitors that they should use the patterns they see on the website for their personal use and not to sell them, as the designers are the only ones who own the copyrights and rights to those items. There is also a copyright sign right by the author's name on the page of a particular item. Last but not least, you will notice that the credits at the bottom of each crafts mentions a source, so in your case, it would say that your tutorial was taken with permission from Arachknits and we would include a direct link to the place where the tutorial can be found on your site.

The Leaky Cauldron easily gets between 70,000 and 1,000,000 hits per month. I believe letting us add your patterns and pictures there would increase your visibility too. And of course, it would enable thousands of crafters all around the world to make wonderful crafts like yours!
Hoping to post your creations soon!

Also be sure to include a link to your charts in the message, otherwise the other crafty witches may not know which pattern you are referring to! Thanks!

Perfect for Goth, Rocker, or Biker fashions, or Film, Stage and Event costume design. You're sure to lure many an on-looker in this lovely and fun bracelet. Although associated with the sea, Sirens (Greek Mythology) are actually beautiful and dangerous half-women, half-bird creatures, that live on one of several Islands near Cypress. The daughters of the River god, Achelous, they lure sailors to their rocky shores with enchanting music and song. Although they lured mariners, for the Greeks the Sirens in their "meadow starred with flowers" were not sea deities, but "winged-daughters of the earth".

Wednesday In the Studio - Movies

Wednesday is here!

My departure draws near, and I am getting excited!  That's right, I said departure.  Next week I will be unavailable.  I am going to take some time for me before I burn out.  Recharging the batteries, spending some time away from the workbench is good for everybody.  There will be working, this is for sure, but for one week the blog will be sporadic at best.

Why movies today? A lot of inspiration for fashion comes from film or television.  Harry Potter's knitting craze, or Hermione's "Time Turner" for instance, jewelry from the Lord Of The Rings like Arwen's Butterfly Pendant can be purchased on line or through specialty catalogs .  See a piece you like on your favorite show?  Try Soap Opera Jewelry, from Soap Operas to programs like Bones, they carry replica jewelry of the pieces worn by the actors.

Below are movies that are out now, or just winding down their theater runs that I would like see, not only for inspiration on style, but because I am interested in the story as well.  They all have a Gothic appeal from your classic ghost story, to Edgar Allan Poe and a re-telling of Snow White.

First is The Woman in Black with Danille Ratcliff.

Next is The Raven with John Cusack.  My friend, Lucritia, and I must go see this together!

A dark comedy Dark Shadows with Johnny Depp.  This promises to be fun.

Not yet out in theaters Snow White and The Huntsman.  This looks like an interesting retelling of a favorite Fairy Tale.

Thank you for stopping and having a look.  Perhaps you will find inspiration and entertainment at the movies this Summer.

The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a wonderful day.

Friday Links, Promotions and Facebook

Hello,

Friday is here!  Happy Day!  Today's blog is packed with links and pictures and a look at the new Facebook Time Line for Fan or Business pages.  Some of you may have read the post on the new Etsy Theme Shop application that Facebook has rolled out, and we'll get you the link for that, too.  If you're an Etsy Shop owner click on through and check it out.  I know many users are unhappy about the constant changes that Facebook forces on the site and people's profiles.  This isn't so bad, really, it just takes a minute to get used to, once you have discovered where they have hidden things, you'll be cruising the pages like a pro again in no time.

Let's take a look at the Header first.

The large photo at the top is called the Cover.  You may change this picture at any time by clicking on it.  Your Cover Photos will be stored in the Photo Albums of the page automatically.

Next up, the new Link Buttons, this is where you can place the applications you like, such as Events, Photos, Notes, Maps, Favorite Games, etc...

This area is also where your new Etsy Theme Shop Button goes.  Mine can be found at the right hand top of the row.  If you would like to have the app for your Etsy Shop you can follow this link: Etsy Theme Shop App

If you would like to see what a Shop looks like before clicking Add To Your Facebook Page, you may follow this link.
You will have to log in to see the page.  You, too, can create your own shop's look, discounts, coupons, or promote another shop!  Yes, you can do that, as well!  Shop from this page and receive an automatic 10% off the regular Etsy price,  (Your price is shown in green.)  The simple page looks like this, page 1 on top and a menu at the bottom that will continue with your entire Etsy Shop inventory.

Are you having trouble finding your comments or posts?  It's not a wonder.  Some one decided that it would be an excellent idea to stuff them in a box at the top of the page, where no one can see, find or read them.  There is no changing this, and yes, I, too, am not happy about it.  But if you are looking for a comment or post from a a fan, customer or friend this is where you can find them now.  This box is permanently "pinned" to the top of your page.

The box beneath the Posts and Comments is where you will find the "Likes".  These are the pages that you have liked while logged in as the Admin or while  using your Fan Page to peruse Facebook.

Everything else works pretty much the same.  You can post a status update, link to your Etsy Shop items, post pictures, and keep track of your activity and insights.

Happy Facebooking!

Here is the link to a new open group on Linked In, Northwest Artisans Guild. I started the group in hope of connecting and networking with people closer to home.  I am the only member so far.  The purpose of the group is to network, connect, showcase your art, work, wares, photography, what have you, and most important it is to share and exchange ideas and to have fun!  Help will be offered to all who ask.  Jewelry designers, painters, sculptors, artists, artisans, craftspeople of all kinds are welcome.

We have launched Ravens Nook!  There are items up for sale on the site and as always custom work is welcome.  We take requests.  This weekend I will be chained in the dungeon, I mean sitting at the work table crafting some new, dark and unique items for your perusal.

Did you know that there is now a Youtube Channel for T.A.V.?  That's right.  We have created a Youtube channel for Jewelery Tutorials.  There is only one video up now, but we plan on adding some basic ones soon.  In the mean time you can check out Jump Rings 101, it is uploaded, and playable.

Remember you can find any or all of these links on the right hand side menu bar.  We even have a video bar, right on the menu, you can watch the video without leaving the page. How cool is that?
