Good Morning,

Monday's post discussed a new venue The CraftStar.  Today I thought we would have a look at some of the other features and how to use The CraftStar site.

When you arrive at the site you will be greeted by the Greeting Page, scroll through the page or click Shop at the top of the page.

You will be taken to the Home Page

Here is your navigation window into the site.  You May Search or share from the convenient links at the top left of the page.  If you're already a member / seller you can choose to login and Join The Discussion, see what's happening on the Forums or in your favorite Club Thread on the Chat Boards.

Here I would like to make a note:  The JOIN link is for sellers, you will be asked for a fee ($%.00 a month).  If you continue down the page you will see under the marquis the link Newsletter, if you would like to see what's going on, shop or just keep up to date on the latest events and sales sign up and you can cruise the site for free.

The Search Products bar is just that, type in an item you are searching for and be taken to a page full of your specific item.    Here I have searched for Bracelets.

Click the SHOP button will switch you from a list of items to a list of shops, if you know which shop you're looking for you can find it here, or take a chance and click on a store you have not visited before or looks like it might be you style.

The side bar menu is your best friend here on the site.
You may search, select and click your way through a variety of neat things to look at on site.

Collective: A shop with a theme, various artists will have an item ranging from jewelry to other handcrafted items.

Sales - Check it out and see what is on discount or if that item you've had your eye on has been reduced.

Studio News - The Alchemists Vessel's Five (5) Star Rating

Good Morning,

Wednesday the day that isn't quite the beginning of the week and isn't quite the end of week, an odd day, but a good day.

This morning I would like to re-introduce The Alchemists Vessel's various websites and other things going on in and around the studio and the physical store.

The Alchemists Vessel has a website, two on line stores to shop, and a blog, well of course it does, you're reading it.

The on line stores are on Etsy and Handmadeartists.com.

Etsy has a bad habit of changing things around on you, rather like Facebook, it is annoying and most frustrating at times.  However on occasion the changes, though not necessarily beneficial, they can be interesting.  This newest change is kind of neat and can be found on the menu bar to the left of the shop window.  The photo below is taken from the Administration Section of the shop.

Although the rating is not truly accurate on the shop's page, Etsy has dropped 14 of my followers, and 9 reviews, The Alchemists Vessel still looks pretty good.  The store boasts 124 Admirers, 102 Sales, 86 of which have reviews, 57 of which have additonal comments, and only the most recent 48 are shown.  Disappointing to say the least, but it's nice to know that the Vessel has a five (5)  Star rating.  The ratings are taken from the information above as left by customers, the shop has nothing to do with its own rating at all. I am very pleased!

Little Shop of Artists is coming along nicely and we hope to fill the store from floor to ceiling with more unique and wonderful items for your gift giving needs.

With the Holidays right around the corner we have some fun things coming up at the shop in October.  Septemeber is dedicated to organizing all these things, and we will be open for shopping!

Entertainment and Fun at Little Shop of Artists
Open Haunted House
Spooky Earring Class **to be announced before Halloween.
Henna Tattoos
Tarot Readings
and more...

Hope to see you there.

Thank you for stopping in and having a look.

Knits, Jewelry, And A Class Or Two

Good Morning,

Monday is here, and Little Shop of Artists is closed today.

Last week in the shop the Striped Scarf demonstration project was finished and we made a pair of earrings.

The completed scarf.  Finishing includes weaving in the ends (stray lengths of string used to create the stripes), washing and blocking the scarf.  At 94.5" inches long it is worthy of Dr. Who, and although the pattern got away from me at the end, I am also very fond of unique and interesting knits.  "Punctuation Mark" ends in a reverse of the original striped pattern and adds a bit of flair to an otherwise pretty, but kind of boring scarf.

As classroom / in-store demonstration a pair of earrings have been created using manufactured items you may find at your local craft or art supplies store.

Materials:

1 Pair of Ear Wires
1 Set of Round Findings (7 Drop - 7 holes in the finding)
16 Jump Rings
14 Head Pins
14 Glass Bi-cone Beads in 4, 6 and 8mm sizes
Length of Figaro (link pattern) Chain
Wire Cutters
Flat and Chain Nosed pliers
*Round Nosed pliers (used to create the "eye" for the jump ring)

Assembly:

Slide all beads onto the head pins (as in the photo above).
Open all 16 jump rings.
Cut equal lengths of chain as follows (use wire cutters)
4 lengths of 3 chain links
4 lengths of  5 chain links
2 lengths of 7 chain links

With the pliers, bend the head pins back at a 90 degree angle from the beads top.  Cut the head pin to about 1/4" in length.  With the ROUND NOSED pliers, grasp the end of the head pin and roll it back towards the bend in the head pin,  forming a eye (circle).  Repeat this step with the other 13 pieces.

Slide the lengths of chain onto the jump rings and leave them open,  4 rings will not have chains.

Open the circle you made at the top of the head pin.  Grasp the open edge with your pliers and gentle twist the wire to the side, opening the "eye" of the pin.

Counting from the outer holes to the center

Starting with the 4mm beads, slide the end through a jump ring, and slide the jump ring through the first and last holes of the finding.  Repeat for the second one.

Using four 6mm beads, slide one bead onto the 3 link lengths of chain, slide 3 link chain through the jump rings and slide the jump ring through the second and fifth holes in the findings.

Using four 6mm beads, slide one bead onto the 5 link lengths of chain, slide 5 link chain through the jump rings and slide the jump ring through the second and fifth holes in the findings.

Using the two 8mm beads, thread the eye of the pin through the last link in the 7 link length of chain.  Slide the other end of chain on to a jump ring and  through the center hole of the finding.

Using the final jump rings, open them and slide the ear wires onto them, slide the jump rings through the center  holes at the top of the finding and close the ring.  Your pair is complete and ready to wear.

When you are finished you will have created a pretty pair of Chandelier style earrings.  Very fetching.

Studio News - I Have A Dream

Good Morning,

Today we have a brief news blip and then it is back to work work work!

Last Saturday, I received the keys to the building I have rented for Little Shop of Artists.  The Keys to My Dream as it were.  There is something amazing about  receiving keys, whether they be to your very own first apartment, house, or business; new keys seem to sing of things to come and promise so much just by sitting in your hand.

I am very excited and elated.  We also toured the building with one of the Participating Artists, who is ready to move in soon.

There are two weeks ahead of us, and the artists are looking forward to setting up their displays in the store.

Many things have changed, and a lot of that is due to the interior space.  Boutique like in its set up, individual artists will be easy to find.  Friendly, knowledgeable staff will be available to assist customers and clients with measurements, trying on jewelry, and special order or purchase unique one of a kind items that may be customized, ordered through the shop or Individual Artists Websites.

We are looking forward to opening the doors July 01, 2013, that's a Monday! Information, times and actual dates will be forthcoming.

We hope you'll stop by for a visit, and maybe those gift giving needs as well.

Thank you for stopping in and having a look.

The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant day.

Inside Little Shop of Artists

Good Morning,

Today, I am pleased and very excited to tour the interior of the building for what will be the home of Little Shop of Artist.

Taken with my cellphone, it may not be the best quality, but rent is paid, and clean up will commence on or about June 15th, 2013.

We, the participating artists, are hoping to open the doors July 01, 2013.

We hope that you will come and visit us if you are in the Boise, Idaho area.

Once the participating artists have set up their displays, these now empty rooms will be filled with Art, Handmade Goods, Jewelry, Gifts and other items to delight the eye and treat the senses.

If you are an artist in the surrounding Boise, Idaho area, stop by and see if we might assist you in showcasing your work.  We welcome all kinds of wares, pottery, knitting, woodworking, sculpting and more, a monthly rental fee applies we offer both participating and featured artists space.  (Currently LSoA is not accepting any more Jewelry Designers at this time).

Thank you for stopping in and having a look.

Silver Spoons and Solder

Good Morning,

The middle of the week brings me to my studio and what's been going on at the workbench.

This week we have a couple of in process up-cycled pieces to share.  They still require a little refinement and several hours in a tumbler, but we can show off a little bit of what's new.

I am sure many of you have owned or currently own a spoon ring.  This is a simple ring made from a spoon handle.  Taking a twist on the battered utensils for other uses, I tried my hand at making pendants.  Sawing the handles from the bowl, the bowl is put aside and the handle is then heated, hammered and harangued into submission.

I would like to mention the utensils I used were gifted to be by my Mom, and they come from her various trips to the "Junk Shops" or "Antiquing" as she likes to call it.  They are well used items that is for sure.

These are very simply pendants.  This handle was severely damaged, using a hammer the damage was incorporated into a hammered surface texture.  The "stone" is from an other jeweler's "junk bag", also gifted to me.  A handwritten note read "Assrtd Real Gems".  These were pre-set and meant to be used in leather or a belt buckle.  Also terribly damaged and tarnished, the prongs were cut from the setting, the setting was cleaned, filed and then soldered to the spoon handle.

I really like the primitive look this has.  It reminds me of something one might find at an archeological excavation or perhaps unearthed by accident. I think this stone is a deep green Tourmaline.

An other example, and this one I am not sure about.  The stone is either a dyed quartz or apatite.  There is a little seed or inclusion in the stone which leads to me think it is either a dyed crystal or a man-made (imitation) stone with an imperfection.  It is a pretty light blue color.  The camera tends to make things darker than they really are.

Here there are marks and imperfections across the surface of the spoon handle.  Tumbling the piece will polish and remove the small surface scratches creating a uniform surface and shiny finish.

Up-cycled means just that, pieces and items are reused and re-purposed to create something new.  It also means that surfaces do not meet exactly due to curvatures and other factors of the materials being used, giving each one a unique character and style all it's own.  These are meant to look like they have been made long ago and far away and to appear handmade, as a Blacksmith may have made them.

Thank you for stopping in and having a look.

The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant day.

Monday Miscellany: Classes, News and a Link or Two

Good Morning,

The work week begins, I hope all had a relaxing weekend.

New classes begin at Jo-Ann's for May and June, don't forget parents, this is a great way to entertain the kids and teach them a fun skill.  There are classes geared for teens, as well as kids the projects are simple and require no prior knowledge or skill to attend.  Check out your local Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores.  If you're in Boise,  classes are held at the 1085 N. Milwaukee, across the street from Home Depot.

There is always Jewelry 101, $35.00 2-1/2 session

Everything at The Alchemists Vessel or Blackbird Metalworks is handcrafted from start to finish.  I would like to share with you a portion of a Super Secret Project.  This is called Moss or Mossy Agate.  This cabochon was hand cut, and processed by John Rasmussen of Rasmussen Gems and Jewellery, LLC.   It will be mounted in a ring shank and sent back across the US for a very special present.  He did an excellent job bringing out the lovely mossy inclusions on the surface of the stone, I think it looks like a tree and a bird or butterfly.  Then again I have a very active imagination.

ANNOUNCEMENT:

I am excited and happy to announce that the building for Little Shop of Artists is available once again!  Watch this blog for more details.  The artists and myself are looking forward to moving in and setting up the wares.  As soon as we are in and organized all will be invited to the Grand Opening Event.

This coffee collage is an original, one of a kind piece. I created it by painting with professional grade heavy watercolor paper with layers of acrylic paint and hand cutting the individual letters and pieces to make this unique collage. It would make a wonderful gift for a coffee loving friend or would look great hanging in the kitchen or dining room. I left it unmatted and unframed so that you can choose the color and style that will look just right with your decor. Click on the photos above to get an idea how it would look with different color mats and frames.

Copper coiled wire spiral red tiger eye bracelet on Etsy

This eye-catching handmade bracelet by DianaShyeJewelry on Etsy features a copper coiled wire spiral winding around gleaming red tiger eye beads.

The first step in making this bracelet was to create a long copper wire coil of copper by winding fine gauge copper wire around a mandrel. I removed the copper wire coil from the mandrel and stuing it on a length of thicker gauge copper wire. Then I wound the strung coil around the mandrel to create a coiled coil of copper wire. I then strung the 10 mm red tiger eye beads on still another length of even thicker gauge core copper wire and wound the coil of copper coil around the beads and the core wire. Finally, I finished the bracelet off with a handcrafted copper wire clasp.

The bracelet is 7" (17.8 cm) long and 7/16 " (12 mm) in diameter. It fits a small to medium wrist.

Red tiger eye is a birthstone for Scorpio (October 23 - November 22).
