Featured Artist - Rasmussen Gems and Jewellery, LLC

Good Morning,

Today we feature a fellow Metal-smith, Jon Rasmussen and his wife Debora of Rasmussen Gems and Jewellery, LLC.  I have had the pleasure of getting to know their work through the site Handmade Artists where they have a shop and Jon participates on the forums.

What the Rasmussen's say:
All jewelry and gemstones offered here are handcrafted in our shop. Debora does beading to design and fabricate necklaces, anklets, bracelets, ear rings, and key chains. John does lapidary to cut the gemstones, metalsmithing (silver and copper) to make the jewelry and wire wrapping. If you need something made to your order, please message us. Custom orders are always accepted. All Sterling silver pendants will come with a 20 inch Sterling silver box chain with a ring clasp.  All mixed metal, copper and brass pendants will come with a 20 inch leather necklace.  Clasp on the leather will vary due to availability. Gem identification and appraisal services are also available. 

Jon does a variety of things, from cutting and shaping the stones he works with to creating the finished piece.  His work ranges in price and is always beautiful and unique.

Emerald Cabochon Pendant

 29.53 carat high dome sugar loaf EMERALS cabochon mined in Franklin, NC and cut in our lapidary.  The frame was designed and constructed in our shop.  The frame was made with square and half round Sterling silver wire. The entire product was handmade in America.

Copper Arcs Pendant 1041

 This copper pendant was forged from 8 gauge half round wire, then soldered together with silver solder.  The pendant is about 2 inches long.  Each arc was 1 inch before dapping ang putting the design together.  A leather necklace 20 inches long will be furnished with this pendant.

An accomplished lapidary, Jon also cuts and fashions pieces for purchase as well.

Citrine Tear Drop Gem

 9.6 carats of beautiful citrine has been faceted.  This gem is loupe clear of inclusions and has good clean facet meets.  Would make a fantastic showy cocktail style ring.  Could also be used for a pendant on a necklace.  The stone measures 17.91 x 12.83 x 8.58 mm, so it should fit into 18 x 13 calibrated findings.

 

Debora does the beading and designs lanyards, necklaces and other pieces to incorporate into the finished designs or pieces that Jon creates, and her own stand alone pieces that are Ready-to-Wear.

 Necklace and Earring Set 1061

 22 inches of colorful blue and green beads (round about 1 cm in diameter) accented with clear beads with a black core make up the necklace.  The matching earrings feature one of each bead.

Necklace and Earring Set 1033

Very unique design featuring a life saver toggle clasp and orange donut discs accented with purple and orange round beads, this necklace is 29 inches long.  The matching earrings have white pearls in the donut hole.

Featured Artist Rasmussen Gems

Good Morning,

Today's Artist is Rasmussen Gems and Jewellery, LLC, you have met this rock hound and his wife before.  This husband and wife team combine skills and talent to create some of the prettiest jewelry around.

Making each piece from the ground up, John is a lapidary, digging, cleaning, cutting, shaping and polishing the stone, as well as setting them as a focal point in a finished piece of jewelry.  His wife Debora does the beading and has a wonderful eye for color.  Not only does John do all that, but he also sells stones to other artisans for their needs.  John knows his stuff, studying with International Gem Society and Gemological Institute of America (GIA).

These are one of my favorite pieces in John's Shop and just right for Valentine's Day.  I love the organic and recognizable shape.

BA Copper Heart Earrings

 

Product Details:

Handcrafted copper hearts shaped and forged with 14 karat white gold posts soldered with Sterling silver.  These are definitely one of a kind.

Know someone that has cats, dogs, is a Veterinarian?  This super cute and custom ring was crafted by John.  What amazing work, and so cute, stylish and kitschy all at the same time.

Custom Paw Ring

Product Details:

This style/design is based on the tiger paw.  The ring is made with sterling silver sheet, wire and heads.  After the metal is put together and burnished, lab created sapphires are set in the heads.  The ring is custom made to the specifications of size for each customer.  The pad of the paw is a 8 mm trillion stone and the toes are 6 x 4 mm oval gemstones.  The customer can specify the stone color and size, thus any cat team could be represented with this ring.  Allow one month for the ring to be manufactured (remember, all components/work is done by hand).

There are beautiful cabochons as well as faceted gems.

Jadeite Oval Cabochon

Product Details:

20 x 15 mm oval high dome cabochon cut in our lapidary.  Jadeite is described as the toughest gemstone.  Toughness is not hardness; jadeite is tough because it is extremely hard to break or damage.  Moh's hardness is 6.5. 

Some of Debora's works include this lovely and fabulous green beaded necklace.  I really like the swirl pattern of these beads.

 DLR1 Sea Foam Green Bead Necklace

   

 

Product Details: 22 inch beaded necklace with a sea green motif.  This necklace was designed and crafted by Debora Lee Rasmussen.  She has combined the green of the sea with the yellow of the sun to evoke a maritime theme.  This necklace is great for color coordinating an earth tone clothing selection.

Thursday's are devoted to a featured artist, wherever they may be on the web.   Today we are featuring a fellow handmadeartists.com Vendor, Rasmussen Gems and Jewelry, LLC.

Their welcome announcement explains what they do briefly, but they shop carries so much more than what you would expect to find.

Shop Announcement: Artisan jewelry shop featuring two artists. 

Debora Lee Rasmussen designs and crafts all beaded items. 

John Atwell Rasmussen is the lapidary, gemologist and artisan jeweler

 / metalsmith. All cabochons are hand cut in our lapidary. The two 

artists produce uniquely beautiful jewelry. Custom orders our specialty.

 

This dynamic duo produces beautiful jewelry from high end up scale 

pieces, to beading projects.  As the shop is also a Lapidary, they even

mine their own stones.  These folks really make every thing from the 

ground up.

D Zircon and Marcasite Ring

 

Description: Faceted Zircon (do not confuse this natural stone with 

the man made CZ)d and Marcasite flanking stones set in Sterling 

silver. Size 8

 

Lapis Lazuli Cabochon 25 x 18

Description: 24.6 carat oval cabochon cut in our lapidary from natural Lapis Lazuli purchased in the bazaar of Kandahar, Afghanistan.  This beautiful cabochon is 25 x 18 mm.  The dark blue lazulite is accented by the golden pyrite crystals.

DZ Mixed Bead Cross Necklace

Description: Mixed beads (Blue, pink, silver colored, metal) 

accenting a 1.5 inch tall Christian Cross focal in this 22 inch 

necklace.

 

CR Garnet Pendant 

 Description:  A 20 carat handcut freeform cabochon garnet 

wrapped with Sterling Silver wire.  18 inch Sterling Silver chain is 

also available in the Pendant and Necklace Section.

 

I usually don't gush over a piece when I feature an artist, but this

Chrome Diopside pendant is just gorgeous! One of my favorite

gemstones, and it is rare.  It usually comes from Russia and can also 

be found in the United States.

BL Chrome Diopside Necklace

 

Description: Beautiful faceted chrome diopside gem set in 14 karat gold pendant and hung from a 14 karat gold chain.

BIO: 

John Atwell Rasmussen was educated in Geology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. He then taught geology and after ten years switched professional course to prehospital medicine. He retired from emergency medical services and is pursuing his love of rocks, minerals and gems as the lapidary and jeweler at Rasmussen Gems and Jewelry LLC. He has been educated in Gemology and Jewelry Design and Repair at: International Gem Society, Gemological Institute of America and Penn Foster Career School.

Dr. Rasmussen is assisted in the shop by his wife, Debora Lee Rasmussen. She is disabled and does bead design and crafting making all of the beaded pieces in the shop. Debora previously designed decorative swags and wreaths custom made for home decor.

Winter Gems

Meant to mimic Holly berries, and the feel of the Winter season  Pearl and Garnet drops float in front of Light Green Glass leaves that hang suspended from a Sterling Silver Chain.

This 20" Necklace is crafted with Hand-turned Sterling Silver 18 gauge Jump Rings, Fresh Water Pearls from White Lotus Farms, Round and Coin shaped Natural Garnet beads, and  Light Green glass leaves, hung on Sterling Silver Long Curb Chain and a Sterling Silver Lobster-claw Clasp.

$45.00 / Set comes with matching earrings and is boxed for gift-giving.

NOTE:  The earrings shown are the pair I have matched to the set.  The Glass leaves have some weight and I feel that they would be too heavy to wear in the ears from either a Post, French Wire or Fishhook style finding.  I can make a pair to match the drops, if desired.  Please indicate your choice of earrings if interested in the piece.
