Pantone Color of The Year for 2016

Good Morning,

This morning's post is brief, as we introduce Pantone's Color of the Year for 2016, there are two.

Basically they are pastel pink and blue.  Nice, but not very designer friendly, unless you design for children under five.


Although there is a gemstone Rose Quartz that can be found occurring naturally as a very soft pastel pink, it can also be dyed to a uniform deeper color.  The Alchemists Vessel carries a limited selection of Rose Quartz Jewelry.

This bracelet has sold, but as example of the very soft pink color of the natural stone.

Or you can always go with good old pink.

Pastel Blue is a bit harder, about as close as the artist can get to it is Turquoise, or Blue Lace Agate, light blue Czech Glass beads in colors like "aqua" or "ice blue".

Shabby Chic Violin, made from a wood cut out, handmade, primed and painted in sage green, covered in delicate white lace, 4 cream pearl strings follow it from the scroll to the bottom, a very light lace pattern was spray painted on the body, the strings at the bottom end up in a green flowered cameo, daisy stickers and bow, green wired rhinestone bling, 2 green rhinestone lil angels cover the body. The scroll/top is covered with a little vintage Christmas tree broche full of rhinestones and a crystal chandelier tear drop.

Guitar, Handmade Mosaic Guitar "Broken Songs and Melodies"

This little guy started life as a guitar for a child. When I found it, it was tucked away in someones attic just longing to have new life breathed into it, as I do with all my recycled mosaic items. An up cycled, recycled piece of art. Many, many hours and weeks later I ended up with what I call "Broken Songs and Melodies" mosaic guitar. This almost 31 inches long, formerly Acoustic Mosaic Guitar evolved from unusable to a decorative wall hanging for the visual enjoyment of the music lover, music artist, friends of music or a protégé. Ready to be hung in your home, office, class room , studio or even a gift for that special one. Display this baby where the sunlight hits it and it will throw off lil sparkles and reflections from the mirror glass on the neck. Every lil cut Mosaic Piece I placed with utter loving care so as to preserve some of the patterns of the Vintage China Plate Rims. One small piece at a time, utterly time consuming, but I love what I do. I covered this guitar with a mosaic of broken, cut fine china porcelain plate rims and complimented it with stained glass. The neck is covered in mirror glass in the warm tones of bronze, peach and silver. I restrung the two strings which were left with burgundy pearls. It is trimmed out in ivory gimp to protect your furniture or hands while handling it. Have you ever tried to restring a guitar string with single pearls, “boyng” the steel string went and pearls are flying all over my studio. Mosaic Lazy Susan, handmade, Broken, cut china plate rim Mosaic

Handmade Mosaic large Lazy Susan. I found this vintage Lazy Susan which had been discarded for its terrible looks.
I sanded, primed, and painted it white, distressed it a bit, covered the top with a handmade Mosaic made from already damaged cut up vintage fine bone china plate rims and stained glass. The mosaic also has two lil porcelain girls in them who used to have a couple of feather angel wings, which I removed. The mosaic is grouted in a antique white grout and sealed. It still turns very nicely, as a lazy susan should.
Measurements: 16 inches in diameter and 2 inches high 
Uses are endless, one can use it for the obvious in the dining room now for your condiments, napkins etc.
In your office for your pencil holders, scissor, the cup with pens, scotch tape and such....
In the baby's room for the powders, creams, wipes and lotions, one turn around and everything is right handy.
I am sure one can find even that your cup cakes look fabulous on them, even a cake. Or just set it on the counter and have your guest admire your treasure.

Today I would like to share with you a wonderful artist, my friend, Debbi Huntington of Yankee Burrow.   Debbi is one busy lady, from handcrafting her own designs and items, to spiffing up that unique vintage piece or attending her local Evening Flea Market, tending the chickens (yes, she has chickens), or her grandchildren.  Somehow she finds the time to blog, support other artists and lends a hand on The CraftStar.

This years must have fashion color is Radiant Orchid and this is one of the cutest purses I have seen in a long time.  Handmade, crocheted, a skill that eludes me, I just love this bag.

Radiant Orchid Lilac Beaded Handbag Shoulder Purse

This soft purple handbag is a great fashion accessory for this summer months.  Crocheted in a pattern I have had since the 80's, I modified it by adding the front flap and shortening the strap. The plastic pony beads are worked into the crochet pattern, not sewn on, so there is no worry about the beads popping off from daily use.  In fact, the bag I created way back then is still in use today.  I added a nice fabric lining to this bag so you won't have to worry about combs or pens or anything getting caught, or sticking out, while carrying this bag.
It measures 12 1/2" wide and 10 1/2" deep and is crocheted with Germantown worsted yarn - 100% pure virgin wool.
Handwash in lukewarm water and gentle soap, roll in a towel and then lay flat to dry.


What little Gryffindor boy or girl wouldn't just adore wearing these slippers and roaring around as they chase the Snitch about the house?
 

Lion Head Slippers Crocheted for Children

I crocheted these adorable stuffed lion slippers for my newest grandson, and I also want to share them with you and your loved little ones.
I first made slippers for all my children when they were little, and after my grandson was born, I pulled out his fathers lion slippers and wanted to re-create them for the baby.  My son actually wore his slippers until he was 16, and as you can see by the picture, he can still fit into them.  I save most everything related to crafting, but I did not have the original pattern for these slippers, but after a short internet search, I found the book on a vintage shop.  It's a Leisure Arts Craft Leaflet by Sur Penrod dated 1986.  My son was thrilled to carry on this tradition with his son.
Let me create a new heirloom for your baby with made to order slippers.  You can choose from a lion, tiger, dog, bunny, cat, panda, bear, and mouse.  Each pair is made to order to fit your child, so please give me about 2 weeks to complete your order.  And at the time of check out, please leave me a comment with the measurement of the child's foot.  4 1/2" is small, 6 1/2" is medium, and 8 1/2" is large, but I can adjust the slipper to fit any foot size, (within reason). 


 How cool is this?

Vintage Geiger Counter Detect-Ore GC.111

I can't remember exactly when or where we first discovered this wonderful vintage geiger counter, but  I do believe it is from WWII.  There is a section where you can hook up a phone and a section where you can hook up a geiger counter, which leads me to believe that this is a multi-purpose item.  I could not find anything on-line that even remotely resembles this one.  So if you are a collector of war memorabilia, you need this for your collection.

 

Now here is something truly unique and different.

 

Yellow Abalone Shell Pendant Vintage

I found this beautiful yellow color abalone shell (I think) pendant at a local consignment shop, and quickly snatched it up.  It was dirty and tarnished, but still the golden color shone through, so I took it home and cleaned it up.  I strung it on a simple cord and ribbon necklace that measures 18" from end to end with a 2" extension.  The pendant itself measures 1 1/2".
There is no marking on the silver so I could not do much research on it, and since I am not a gemologist, I can not guarantee that the stone is abalone shell, but that is what other, more knowledgeable, jewelers have suggested.
Regardless, this is a beautiful piece of vintage jewelry.

Reduce Reuse Recycle

Good Morning,

Do you ever find yourself staring at your crafting supplies and wondering where that pendant, string of beads or clasp went?  You know its in there somewhere, but where?  

Are you an impulse buyer?  Do you suffer from Shiny Syndrome?  "Ooh shiny, I will make this something with this."  Into the shopping cart it goes with no rhyme or reason, just a vague idea of "using it for something" and then placed with your crafting supplies, never to be seem again.

Do you have a love / hate relationship with your projects?  You love the materials, but attempt after attempt at creating a piece just doesn't seem to work?

Do you have items that haven't sold, and are sitting around collecting dust?  Today the blog shares some fun and simple ideas to get the juices flowing or at least the inventory pared down.  We won't talk about Cash Flow and inventory at the moment, that's for another post, but here are a couple of ideas for you.

Get Organized.  A couple of Plastic Containers, Tupperware, or old shipping boxes can make excellent compartments for your crafting supplies.  Findings, beads, clay, tools or what have you can be tucked in a box and returned to your closet or shelf readily available, and everything will be right where you left it.  Convenient and saves hunting for things you know you have around there somewhere.

Think / Plan.  Oh yes, that is very pretty, but what I am going to do with it?  Before your next crafting purchase take a moment to think about how you will incorporate the item into a project.  Do you have a project for the piece? Will you require more items to complete the project.  When do you intend to use the supply to make something?  These check list questions may help you decide whether or not you need a new supply, have a specific use or project for it.  Your crafting supplies and your wallet will thank you later.

Destash.  This is tough I know, you have spent money on the items, you intended to do something with them, but there they sit unused.  What to do with them?
Trade with another craftperson.
Compile Kits for making an item and sell them at an "at cost" price.
Create Sample Packs and pass them out the potential business contacts.
Offer a FREE GIFT with purchase.
* Check your local school or other programs that may be in need of supplies, and donate them.  In some cases the donation may be tax deductible.  Keep your receipts and ask the donation recipient for one, too. 
Host a Craft Afternoon.  Get your unused supplies together, invite your friends over and get to creating and having fun.  Of course your pals get to keep the stuff they make.

Art In The Yard.  Hold a Garage / Yard Sale, but instead of your typical garage sale items or finds, put your items out on display and see what happens.  Invite a fellow crafts person and have a little show all your own.

Flash Sales.  Hold a flash sale on your site or through a Flash Sales site like Hautelook.  What is a Flash Sale?  It is a sale of items that takes place for a limited time with limited selections, and item prices reduced up to 75%.  You don't have to cut your prices that much, but offering a sale is bound to get folks interested.  Try selling the earrings, or something else you have an over abundance of with a Flash Sale.
