How To Remove A Stuck Finger Ring

Good Morning,

Today we have a brief video on how to remove a stuck finger ring without cutting it off.  Thanks to Dr. Simon Carley and his colleagues at the Centre for Evidence Based Emergency Care at Manchester Metropolitan University for posting this video on you tube.






You don't have to be a patient to remove a ring.  We urge you to be careful and remind you that this is for information purposes.  Please don't go out and try to get your rings stuck on fingers just to try this technique.

Chainmaille Ring Tutorial

Good Morning,

Tuesdays are usually put aside for Five Gift Ideas from around the web.  I thought I'd change things up a bit today with a short and simple Chainmaille Ring Tutorial.

Materials listed are for the ring below.  Questions and comments are always welcome.

This makes a European 4-in-1 length of chain with "Speed Maille" instructions for 2-in-1 weaving.

Materials:

This super simple ring can be made in a variety of metals.
The tutorial project uses Sterling Silver plated over brass jump rings.
Materials make an average US size 7-1/2 to 8  ring.
AR = 2.94
66 + 1 Sterling Silver plated 18g (1.02mm) 3mm (ID) Jump rings
Open 23 jump rings Close 44 jump rings

 
 1. Place four closed rings on one open ring and close the ring.  
(Here you see two rings added, add two more for a total of four closed rings.)









2. Flip the rings so they lay flat on your work surface.  Like this. 







3. Place two closed rings on one open ring.  (See picture 1)


4.  Slide the open ring down (into) the ring on the bottom, and up (through) the ring on the top.  Close the ring.  

NOTE: It may be easier to weave the open ring through the unit and then add the two closed rings to the open ring, and then close the ring.

Repeat steps three (3) and four (4) until your ring is the required length.  About 2-1/2" long.




Closing the ring:

Slide one open ring down into the bottom ring and up through the top ring.  Form the ring shape around a finger or mandrel so you can hold it steady and bring the opposite side up and around to meet the jump ring.  Slide the jump ring up through the ring on the left and down through the ring on the right.  Close the ring.

Your ring is complete and ready to wear.  

 There is no beginning or end, the circle is continuous.  Amaze your friends with this fun puzzle.  

Makes a very pretty decoration.  Perfect for those that like the look of maille, but do not want to wear a large piece.

Project Note:  For a larger ring continue to follow steps three and four until the desired size is reached.  Check size by measuring around the finger it is to fit, or the correct size on a ring mandrel.  Close the ring as described in the final step of the project.


Material and Project Notes:

AR stands for Aspect Ratio.  This is the number of rings that may fit comfortably or leave enough "wiggle room" when added to another ring.

Wire Gauge:  18g or 1.02mm thick wire.

ID: Interior Diameter - The jump rings were wound on a 3mm mandrel.  The outer diameter of each jump ring is about 6mm.

Throughout the ages Snakes have been a staple symbol of jewelry, design and decor, temple motifs and literature.  Many cultures believe that snakes are symbolic of protection from harm, or used as an icon of power and leadership, as seen in the Ancient Egyptian crowns and tomb treasures of the Pharaohs.

U.S. Size 9.  This stunning and simple, interesting and unique ring is one of a kind.  Hand forged from a single length of stock, it has been twisted and formed by hand. The head was hammered and is set with a gorgeous deep blue (Lapis) enameled "stone".  Scales have been stamped into the shank and may appear as tool marks, but are part of the design.

Holiday Announcements

Good Morning,

Thursday's are usual reserved for a featured artist.  Since I do not have a participant today, I thought we would put the Holiday Schedule of sorts up.

Little Shop of Artists will be closed Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 2013, Thursday.

We would like to encourage you to not rush out with the throngs and push and shove, spending your valuable time vying for that over-priced mass-manufactured item, and instead spend that time with family and friends.  Those "sales" really aren't sales and handmade items from your local business are so much better!

Please feel free to share this photo wherever you may post.  I think it is so important to NOT feed the greed machine.

I made an error, last weekend, November 02, 2013, I mistakenly thought was Shop Small Business Saturday, no sir, no indeed. The correct date for this years Shop Small Business Saturday is November 30th, 2013.  Stay home for the holiday and visit your local businesses on the weekend.  Those independently owned and operated businesses can only be successful and survive if you, the customer, shop's there.  Why  line the pockets of faceless greedy corporations that do nothing for their workers and have no heart or soul?  Give your money to those that truly deserve it, those that struggle to make ends meet, those that have small corner shops with lovely items in the window, Cottage Industries that need you more than Target or Walmart or Macy's does, and their products are usually better than those you can find on the Chain Store rack.

Good Morning,

Today we head back to the shop for demonstrations, class sign up, and hoping artists or customers will stop by to see the shop and what's in the shelves.

The blog ring is on hiatus, and the shop I have wanted to feature must be doing an overhaul because the cupboard was bare.   However if you would like to check out a really neat blog with stories and other features try Yankee Burrow Creations.

This morning I feature some of my items now available on line at handmadeartists.com.  I love this site and must get more organized to find the time to return to the forum, and participate in all the wonderful things that the site has to offer.  So busy with new things I have fallen behind in the maintenance of others.

Big Blue Marble Upcycled Sterling Silver Ring

Product Details:

U.S. Size 8-1/4. This fabulous bright blue glass cabochon organic shaped statement ring is one of a kind. Crafted from recycled materials, found or neglected items, that with much love and little attention were up-cycled into this beautiful and unique ring. Would make a great Cocktail ring, a terrific piece for dancing in the club or some flashy sparkle as you rock the night away on stage.

Definitely looks hand made, the shape of the stone has dictated the formation of the bezel, soft edges and waves accent the cabochon's shape well. An elegant ring with a very primitive appeal.

Hand forged from start to finish. The Sterling Silver shank was cleaned and the damaged metal removed. The metal was annealed (heated), re-shaped on a mandrel, sized, sanded, and soldered to the bezel back. Finishing touches include polishing.

The Fine Silver bezel is also repaired and up-cycled Empty of a stone, the missing stone has been replaced with a lovely glass cabochon that fit the setting nicely. Split along the seam, it has been soldered, sanded, cleaned and formed around the glass cabochon, which just happened to fit the bezel cup.

The glass cabochon has bubbles and inclusions inside the piece itself. These may be seen in the photos, although not immediately visible when worn, they add a nice natural look to the ring.
