New Items at Little Shop of Artists

Good Morning,

We have new items both on line and in the store, just in time for the chilly winter months.

These items are available at handmadeartists.com or at Little Shop of Artists, in the store.

The Alchemists Vessel

Leprechaun

100% Acrylic Yarn, Hand-knit Scarf, 65" long (fingertip length), 7" wide, lush, warm and gorgeous.

Holiday Muffatees - Red and Silver

What's a muffatee?  If you remember your Beatrix Potter, Benjamin Bunny's Mother knit them for a living.  In the Victorian era, central heating did not exist and layering clothing was essential for warmth.  Muffatees, sometimes created from old stockings (socks), are usually a knitted tube, with a hole in the side for your thumb to slip through. Covering the back and palm of the hand, leaving fingers free for tasks.  These are a version of those with variations, the cuffs are ruffled and there are no thumb holes.  Makes for a fabulous pop of color underneath a jacket sleeve.

Camouflage

100% Acrylic Yarn in "Dad's Scarf", by Bernat.  6-1/2" wide x 70" long, this full length is great for him or her or a returning Military member.  Warm, thick and wonderfully squishy this makes a lovely warm accessory for the chilly winter months.

Red Garter Scarf

Knit with a blouche' yarn, the Garter stitch gives this a lovely texture.  Full length, makes a great wrap-around and adds a lively bit of bright color to those grey November morns.

You may find these items by following the links or stop in Little Shop of Artists and try them on, or just have a look.

Thank you for stopping in this morning.

The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant day.

KAL with Alix - Camouflage Scarf Finishing

Hello,

This morning it is raining here, what a great day to sit inside and knit.

If you have been following along you should have your last ball of yarn knit up and stitches on the needle with about 2' long tail (end length of yarn).  Now what?  time to bind off those live stitches on the needle.

This is a simple Bind off that keeps your work from unraveling.

Knit the first two stitches, slide the tip of the left needle into the first stitch and pass / slip the first stitch up and over the second stitch.

There is one stitch left of the needle.  Knit the next stitch.  Pass / slip the first stitch on the needle over the stitch you just knit.  Continue until you have reached the last stitch.

When the last stitch is on the needle, you may wrap the loose yarn around the needle, slip the last stitch over the loop and pull the remaining yarn through the last stitch tightening it.  When you are done, it should look something like the illustration below.  You may also thread the remaining yarn through the stitch with a tapestry needle as well.

Whew!  Your done!  Almost.  At this point your scarf should have about 64 triangles and measure about 72" long.

Finishing:

There are ends that weren't long enough to complete a row hanging on one side of the scarf.  With a tapestry needle weave them into the scarf.  Or some people split the yarn and tie it is a knot along the edge of the scarf.  I don't recommended doing it that way, but choose the method that works for you.

Now that all the loose ends have been taken care of, it is time to wash and block your scarf if you desire.

I hand washed mine, and using household towels on a sunny day I spread and pinned my scarf at the edges to lie flat and allowed it dry on my back deck.

Once it is dry it is ready to wear.

I have put this one up for sale in the shop.  $30.00 Hand-Knit Acrylic Scarf, Machine Washable, Cozy and Comfortable.

Thank you for stopping in and having a look.

The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant day.

New items in the Store

Good Morning,

Today's blog is short ans sweet.

A news item or two.

Yesterday, Sunday September 15, 2013, the front parking lot at the shop was repaved.  Little Shop of Artists will be open again Wednesday September 18th or, Thursday, September 19th, this week.

The shop will finally have a computer.   Although it is my personal laptop, services such as shopping an artists on-line shop or site can be done in-store.

We have several new items in the shop including two Fine Art photographic prints from Elton Nesselrodt, they are lovely riverside landscapes, matted and framed.

Autumn is here next week and the weather is turning as are the leaves.  The shop has ventured past jewelry and art-wear to hand-knitted items as well.  This is the very first item I have knit for sale.

"Camouflage" is now finished and for sale, if you have been knitting along with the project, the finishing steps and final touches will be discussed in Wednesday's blog.  Now available in the shop.
$30.00 Hand-Knit Acrylic Full Length His / Her Scarf

Shown here for length / pattern detail.  The scarf has been hand-washed and blocked, the ends taper as the triangles throughout the length of the scarf.

We are in hopes of having several pairs of these cute and feminine Wrist Warmers in shop soon.  Two styles are available "Ruffly Muffatees" and "Texters" - What the heck is a Muffatee?  If you remember your Beatrix Potter you will know that Benjamen's Bunny's Mother had to knit them for a living.  Well that doesn't explain what it is though.  Muffatees are short fingerless gloves of a short.  Many fashion-forward young ladies in the Goth and Steam Punk Fashion scenes will use socks, minus the foot for these fashionable and cute accessories.  In the Victorian era, layering clothes was essential to stay warm in the winter.  Trying to do things in mittens is next to impossible, but "muffatees" allowed you to keep your hands warm and your fingers free for work.

This pair is mine and an example of the Ruffly Muffatee.  They look great under a denim jacket as the ruffle peek-a-boo's from the cuff, and adds a pop to color to the otherwise sometimes dreary Winter attire and grey cloudy days.

Either style would make a great Christmas Gift.

Ruffly Muffatees: $24.00 / pair.

Texters are simple knitted tubes about 7" long with a knitted Thumb-Hole at one side, leaving fingers free for texting and keeping your hands warm at the same time.  Great for driving too.  Currently available in Turquoise (Mint Blue) Acrylic Yarn.

Texters: $20.00 / pair.

Thank you for stopping in and having a look.

The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant day.

KAL with Alix - Camouflage Scarf Session 2

Good Morning,

Today we continue our Knit-A-Long Short Row Scarf with Alixandra Browning of The Alchemists Vessel and current Independent Contractor at Little Shop of Artists.

If you have been following along you should be finished with the first ball of yarn by now.  If you are just joining us, do not fear, you may find the Free Pattern instructions and materials and notions at KAL with Alix Camouflage Scarf from Wednesday, September 4, 2013, of this blog.

After completing the first ball, I have a total of 19 triangles, yours may vary.  My scarf measures 21-1/2" long, again yours may vary.

Today we have photo demonstrations of how to wrap and pick up a wrapped stitch.

Adding the second ball.  This is simple.  Drop the last of the yarn from the first ball when it finished.   Continue knitting the pattern with the new ball from the beginning of the row.

To Pick Up a Wrapped Stitch

As before knit to the correct number of stitches noted in the pattern and slip the next stitch.

The horizontal bar beneath the stitch and even with the needle is what you want to "pick up" with your LEFT hand needle.

The bar has been picked up and you are ready to slide your needle into the stitch in the RIGHT hand needle.

Knit the stitch.

The completed stitch.

What happened:  When a row of knitting is incomplete and worked in other / opposite direction, it will leave a hole in the next row knit to the end or over the skipped stitches.  Wrapping and Picking Up the Wrapped stitch fills the hole in the work.

How To Wrap A Stitch

As before knit to correct number of stitches.

Slip the next stitch to the right hand needle without knitting it.

Bring the yarn from the back of the work to the front of the work.

Slip the stitch back to the Left hand needle

And bring the yarn to the back of the work

You have made a horizontal bar at the bottom of the stitch.  The stitch is now wrapped.

Turn your work around, so it faces the opposite direction.

Slip the first stitch on the left hand needle to the right hand needle.

Purl the next stitch and to the end of the row.

Here you can see the detail of the short row triangles, as you knit back and forth,  both sides will look the same, a stockinette stitch and a garter stitch triangle will appear alternately along the length of material.

Once you have finished your second ball of yarn you should have approximately 42 Triangles and your scarf should measure about 47" long.

My scarf (due to yarn shortage of the first ball) currently consists of 40 triangles and is 45-1/4" long and 6-1/2"wide.  Your measurements may vary.

NOTE:  I chose this particular pattern with this yarn due to Ombre Yarn's tendency to "pool" or to knit / work up with the color changes seeming to match.  This is apparent here, as I wanted it to do this very color pooling, you can see in the green and black heavier / concentrated areas of color throughout the scarf.

Thank you for knitting along or just having a look

We are always happy and available to answer questions or assist knitters with the pattern

The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant day.

Illusion (Shadow) Knitting - FREE PATTERN

NOTE: When first published there was an error at Row 32 of the pattern, this post has been edited and reflects the correct pattern.  *A Chart is also available, if you would prefer.  Please contact us here to have one -e-mailed to you for free.

Good Morning,

Wednesday's posts are usually devoted to new goings on in the studio or the shop.  We will save that for Friday this week I think.

I was asked recently if I know how to create and write a pattern?  In other words, Do I really know what I am doing?  Well, yes, yes, I do.

Although I wrote this pattern a couple of years ago, it may still be knit with the same results.  Featured on The Leaky Cauldron , Harry Potter Crafts, (gallery photo, site is currently under going changes and Tutorial / Instruction are unavailable), it is an easy pattern to follow.

The finished product creates an illusion.  When viewed straight on the piece appears to be striped, when viewed at an angle a picture appears.

Illusion knitting is easier than it looks.

Pattern Instructions are below:

I used Caron Simply Soft 100% Acrylic Worsted Weight (4) in Dark Country Blue and Heather Grey for the colors, like the movie. I changed it to banner or wall hanging. It is about 18-1/2" long from end to end fringe adds about 3" to 6" to over all length (depending on fringe length).

A few notes about the pattern:

The instructions below are for the WRONG SIDE of the pattern only. The RIGHT SIDE is KNIT every row! Just knit nothing else. I did say KNIT the RIGHT SIDE, right?

Ravenclaw Illusion (Shadow) Banner

Approx: 18-1/2" (23-1/2" with fringe)

Materials: Caron Simply Soft 100% Acrylic in Dark Country Blue [MC] and Grey Heather [CC] (no dye lot), 1 skein each (about 315 yards). You may choose any worsted weight yarn in the color of your choice.

Needles: Size 6 (US) straight

Gauge: is about 22 sts and 36 rows = 4", or about 6-1/2 (7) sts. per inch.

NOTES: Two rows of each color are worked and then changed for the next two rows so on and so forth, continue in this manner for the entire project. Carry the colors loosely up the side at each color change, no one will ever notice. Instructions are written for the wrong side only, KNIT every right side (odd numbered) row.

It takes four rows of knitting to complete one row of pattern, the first row is establishing the illusion [CC] the next rows follow the illusion in reverse [MC] making the stitches "pop" out from the material.

The first and last 2 stitches of pattern are a selvage edge to help the piece lay flat and not roll. Light blocking will help if your banner rolls too much.

The design (illusion) is a total of 150 rows, counting the beginning border and end Bind Off rows. The photo is a mirror image, your bird will face the opposite direction when completed.  (New Photos have been provided).

Abbreviations:

K = Knit
P = Purl
MC = Main Color

Find the center bottom of your banner and attach the blue/grey fringe there, alternate the other eight sections and space them equally along the bottom of the banner.

Hang it on your wall, your all done!

NOTE 2:  If desired you may continue in Stockinette Stitch, working the stripe pattern until it is the desired length, you may then follow the instructions from row 136 through row 1 (knit it upside down) and have the image on the opposite side creating a scarf.  You may also continue in the stripe pattern until the piece is 18" shorter than you would like.  Work the Illusion piece and Kitchner stitch or join the pieces together.  Whichever your preferred method the scarf will be stunning in the end.

A little validation or verification... This pattern was originally posted on my knitting blog "Arachknits" (the blog is no longer in use, but the link and pattern are still there.

Hi A....!
First, let me say I'm sorry to post a comment on your blog like this. I generally prefer to e-mail people, but as I couldn't find any other means of contacting you, here I am, posting on your blog :)

I am writing to you because I'm a crafty witch for The Leaky Cauldron, working in the Harry Potter Crafts section, which you can see here: http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org/features/crafts.

As you can see, we are posting tutorials and pictures for all sorts of Harry Potter Crafts there, and I was wondering if you would allow us to post the Ravenclaw illusion banner pictures and tutorial posted above. We would also love to post the pictures for the knitted Hedwig (pattern from Charmed Knits). We would identify the pictures and pattern as coming from you . There is also a disclaimer in each of the tutorials, as well as 2 long paragraphs on the front page of the crafts section explaining visitors that they should use the patterns they see on the website for their personal use and not to sell them, as the designers are the only ones who own the copyrights and rights to those items. There is also a copyright sign right by the author's name on the page of a particular item. Last but not least, you will notice that the credits at the bottom of each crafts mentions a source, so in your case, it would say that your tutorial was taken with permission from Arachknits and we would include a direct link to the place where the tutorial can be found on your site.

The Leaky Cauldron easily gets between 70,000 and 1,000,000 hits per month. I believe letting us add your patterns and pictures there would increase your visibility too. And of course, it would enable thousands of crafters all around the world to make wonderful crafts like yours!
Hoping to post your creations soon!

P.S.: We would appreciate it if you could reply to us (whether you're interested or not) by e-mail at crafts@the-leaky-cauldron.org, as we crafty witches figure out our to-do list from the conversations in our e-mail account. Also be sure to include a link to your charts in the message, otherwise the other crafty witches may not know which pattern you are referring to! Thanks!

**Please be aware this pattern is the property of and belongs to Alixandra Browning of The Alchemists Vessel (Arachknits Blog) and may no be reproduced for sale by any means whether knitting it yourself or printing and selling the pattern.  That is not allowed.

If you would like assistance with creating your own Illusion / Shadow Pattern we can help Chart and Write it for you.

Thank you for stopping by and having a look.  In hope that Knitting Fever has struck and you are off to seek out yarn and needles.

Knits, Jewelry, And A Class Or Two

Good Morning,

Monday is here, and Little Shop of Artists is closed today.

Last week in the shop the Striped Scarf demonstration project was finished and we made a pair of earrings.

The completed scarf.  Finishing includes weaving in the ends (stray lengths of string used to create the stripes), washing and blocking the scarf.  At 94.5" inches long it is worthy of Dr. Who, and although the pattern got away from me at the end, I am also very fond of unique and interesting knits.  "Punctuation Mark" ends in a reverse of the original striped pattern and adds a bit of flair to an otherwise pretty, but kind of boring scarf.

As classroom / in-store demonstration a pair of earrings have been created using manufactured items you may find at your local craft or art supplies store.

Materials:

1 Pair of Ear Wires
1 Set of Round Findings (7 Drop - 7 holes in the finding)
16 Jump Rings
14 Head Pins
14 Glass Bi-cone Beads in 4, 6 and 8mm sizes
Length of Figaro (link pattern) Chain
Wire Cutters
Flat and Chain Nosed pliers
*Round Nosed pliers (used to create the "eye" for the jump ring)

Assembly:

Slide all beads onto the head pins (as in the photo above).
Open all 16 jump rings.
Cut equal lengths of chain as follows (use wire cutters)
4 lengths of 3 chain links
4 lengths of  5 chain links
2 lengths of 7 chain links

With the pliers, bend the head pins back at a 90 degree angle from the beads top.  Cut the head pin to about 1/4" in length.  With the ROUND NOSED pliers, grasp the end of the head pin and roll it back towards the bend in the head pin,  forming a eye (circle).  Repeat this step with the other 13 pieces.

Slide the lengths of chain onto the jump rings and leave them open,  4 rings will not have chains.

Open the circle you made at the top of the head pin.  Grasp the open edge with your pliers and gentle twist the wire to the side, opening the "eye" of the pin.

Counting from the outer holes to the center

Starting with the 4mm beads, slide the end through a jump ring, and slide the jump ring through the first and last holes of the finding.  Repeat for the second one.

Using four 6mm beads, slide one bead onto the 3 link lengths of chain, slide 3 link chain through the jump rings and slide the jump ring through the second and fifth holes in the findings.

Using four 6mm beads, slide one bead onto the 5 link lengths of chain, slide 5 link chain through the jump rings and slide the jump ring through the second and fifth holes in the findings.

Using the two 8mm beads, thread the eye of the pin through the last link in the 7 link length of chain.  Slide the other end of chain on to a jump ring and  through the center hole of the finding.

Using the final jump rings, open them and slide the ear wires onto them, slide the jump rings through the center  holes at the top of the finding and close the ring.  Your pair is complete and ready to wear.

When you are finished you will have created a pretty pair of Chandelier style earrings.  Very fetching.

Fair Isle and Faux Finds

Good Morning,

Happy Monday, I hope that all had a restful and relaxing weekend and are ready to get back to work and be constructive and productive.

This weekend at Little Shop of Artists, we demonstrated Fair Ilse Knitting, an Intermediate Knitting Technique,  and set some new items on the shelves.  Talented and crafty, our resident staff person, Alixandra, worked up a length of a lovely Wintery style Fair Isle Knitting sample in Snowflakes and Bordered Inset Diamonds.

Knit with Caron Simply Soft 100% Acrylic in Deep Plum Heather and Plum Heather, 4 (Worsted weight) Gauge = 18 sts. and 24 rows = 4 inches square on Size 8 (US) 5.0mm.
Project - Size 9 (US) 5.5mm Needles
Gauge - 6 sts. = 1"

Detail of Snowflake pattern.

Fair Isle knitting is a method of "stranding" color as you knit.  Unlike stripes that are knit back and forth row by row, one color at a time, stranding uses two (or more colors in some cases) in the same row, creating a picture / pattern when complete.  As each stitch is knit in its specific color, the color not in use is carried across the knitting by "floating" the unused yarn along the back of the work until it is needed to form the designated stitch.  Many Fair Isle patterns are written in charts as you see below.

Here the white squares represent the background or main color used through out the project.  The blue squares indicate when the new color will be used to begin the contrasting color pattern.  Fair Isle is not only beautiful when finished it is also fun to do!

When complete the sample above will serve as a Winter Scarf.

New Items on the shelves.  These simple little wood boxes are painted by hand using a variety of materials and tools to create unique and interesting faux finishes.  The box below looks like it may have been carved from a hunk of Jasper or perhaps an agate of sorts.

The shop is still looking for participating Artists.  Come on in, bring a sample or two, let's see what you have, and if we can make room for you on a shelf.

Shoe Ins: Ceramics, Paintings, Glass-works, Woodwork, Fine Art, Textiles (Knitting, Crochet, Tie-Dye) etc... If you made it we'll make every effort to find a display area for it.

Thank you for stopping in and having a look.

The Alchemists Vessel would like to wish you a pleasant day.

A Little of This and A Little of That

Good Morning,

Friday is here, so is the weekend!  I will be back in the shop today through Sunday.  Come on down and say hello.

Yesterday I wanted to feature a friend and fellow artists Debbi and Amanda, a mother and daughter team of graphic design, crafting and vintage goodies.  To my dismay the shop on handmadeartists.com was empty.  GASP!  The horror!

She was kind enough to comment on the post and let me know that she has  moved her wonderful and lovely items to The Craft Star.
You may find her handmade and vintage pieces at: Yankee Burrow Creations.

Lilac beaded handbag shoulder purse

This soft purple handbag is a great fashion accessory for this summer months. Crocheted in a pattern I have had since the 80's, I modified it by adding the front flap and shortening the strap. The plastic pony beads are worked into the crochet pattern, not sewn on, so there is no worry about the beads popping off from daily use. In fact, the bag I created way back then is still in use today. I added a nice fabric lining to this bag so you won't have to worry about combs or pens or anything getting caught, or sticking out, while carrying this bag.

It measures 12 1/2" wide and 10 1/2" deep and is crocheted with Germantown worsted yarn - 100% pure virgin wool.

Featured Artist on a Tuesday - lisianblue

    Hello and Happy Tuesday!

Switching things up a little bit this morning, just to keep everybody on their toes!

This morning's featured artist is another clever and creative person from Handmade Artists, lisianblue.

Lisianblue creates hand-knitted and crocheted items for babies to babes, and she has a lot of terrific things.  I admire her skills, although I knit, and am pretty adept at it, Lisainablue can crochet, a skill / talent that eludes me.

Here are some fun and wonderful items from her shop and a couple of them would make fabulous gifts for Summer, or the new Mommy in your circle of friends.

Like these fingerless gloves.  These would be fabulous for a Summer Date Night, don't need a jacket, but bring something to keep the chill away.  These are great and lovely!

Product Description:  Sparkly ivory and lace elbow length fingerless gloves are a fun yet elegant accessory.
Made with sport weight acrylic yarn in ivory with bits of sparkle throughout, these three quarter length fingerless gloves are 13" long and 8" around.  With an all around lacy pattern they can be worn on either hand.  Comfortable thumb opening, but they do not cover part of the thumb.  They will comfortably fit up to a 9 1/2" arm.
These unique hand crocheted fingerless gloves have a lacy hand edge and I've added a row of picot stitching at the elbow end to extend the lacy effect.
Want these lovely fingerless gloves in a different size, please feel free to send me a message and I will make a pair just for you.  Want a different color?  That's a possibility too.

Product Details:  Cool summer white cotton  thread crocheted in an open stitch with an elongated picot edging makes this sweet flowered hat flirty and romantic.
Simply elegant to wear for a beach wedding, and your honeymoon too!  Dress up a summer outfit for a night out dancing, or out and about around town.
A stretcy 20" will fit most adult women up to 23" with an 8" cap long enough to cover the ears.  If you need this shorter or smaller, let me know and I can adjust it before mailing it out.
This juliet style cap is lovingly hand crocheted  with white cotton crochet thread.

Product Details:  Pretty ruffled baby bib with a sweet flower made with 100% cotton in purple, lavender, yellow, and white to keep your sweet baby clothes clean.
Thick cotton tie bib measures 9.75" wide x 13.5" long. Machine washable and dryable.
Mary Jane style matching baby booties coming soon.
    Custom orders gladly accepted.

I know, we're just entering the summer months, but this is one of my favorites of her items.  This would be great for that Office Christmas Party, or just to add a little Holiday spirit to that bulky winter outfit.

Product Details: Fun Santa hat to keep you warm while out and about, skiing, sledding, hanging out.
Made with acrylic yarn with eye lash or "fun fur" yarn along with the white for the brim and pompom.  This one is 20" around and 20" long.   Fits 21" - 24"  heads
If you need a smaller one let me know and I can adjust this one, or make a whole new one if the original one is sold.  Please let me know head circumference if you want a smaller or larger one.
**Note: after clicking on Add to Cart, you need to click on Shopping cart in the upper right hand corner. Please wait for PayPay to return you to the shop to complete the transaction.
To contact me for any questions or size adjustments, click on "contact" on the right hand side - by the shop avatar, while on the product page.  It's on the left side on the main shop page.

What lisianblue has to say about herself:

    Bio:

I enjoy doing so many things, painting, sewing, knitting, crocheting, drawing, photography. I have many years of experience in all these areas. My grandmother taught me how to knit and crochet when I was about 8. I am the mother of 2 and a grandmother to 3 beautiful children from 9mo's to 12 yrs old.

    HATS & SCARVES
All hats and scarves are hand crocheted or hand knit in a smoke free, cat friendly home. I try to use a smaller hook or needle so you get a hat with a tighter weave to help keep the cold air out. Each hat and scarf is washed with a mild detergent without the use of fabric softener, and put away to limit any further contact with my furry friends. If your hat does not fit, I will gladly make another one for you as soon as I receive the original back in the same great shape it was mailed, or adjust the original. Custom orders: I will be happy to work with you on colors and yarn choices - except for wool. I love wool, but unfortunately, I am highly allergic to it. I can get away with working with a mohair blend, but otherwise I pretty much have to stick with acrylic, cotton or bamboo.
All orders are mailed through USPS, as soon as possible after your payment is cleared through PayPal.
If you have any questions, comments, please feel free to contact me

I hope to be adding some clothes for children in the near future. Spring - Summer 2012

Thank you for coming by and have a great day.
